Racism And Discrimination In Sports

Racism in sports illustrates a reflection of people's ignorance and stubbornness, revealing the discrimination of a culture.

During a exhibition game between the Philadelphia Flyer and the New Jersey Devils, Wayne Simmonds is called to take a penalty shot. During this moment someone in the crowd throws a banana onto the ice while Simmonds is attempting his penalty shot. The banana in the far right of this image displays a huge symbol as a racist remark towards African American's. The banana is displayed to call Simmonds a monkey, a very racist and offensive remark towards his culture. Simmonds goes on to score the goal and to see that someone had thrown a banana onto the ice. Later on after the game he reply's in a interview "That was unfortunate" displaying his hurt towards this moment. this image reflects on the ignorance of people, and the discrimination in sports.

(Washington Redskins Logo//Property of NFL)
The Washington Redskins logo displayed as a Native Indian, founded in 1932. "Redskin" is defined as, a slang term for Native Americans and displayed displayed as insulting to their culture. The most powerful thing in this image is the Native Indian in the center of the logo. This NFL team has always caused problems with the public but has never been taken into consideration on how serious this topic is. This term "Redskin" is just as serious as calling an African American the N word, and is a very serious and hurtful thing to the Native Indian culture. This topic hasn't escalated into anything serious, even Tom Brady a NFL superstar illegally deflating the football before a game is looked over how Washington's logo is a form of discrimination. This image reflects on people stubbornness and their discrimination in sports.

PK Subban an African American man in the NHL who plays for the Montreal Canadians, has received discrimination his whole NHL career. This image displays 2 adults trying to get Subban's attention during the warm up before the hockey game. The most important part of this image is the little boy in the far right, and how he is looking at the two adults. As a young child you do things that you see and you look up to older people, in this scenario the men are not displaying a good action towards this young boy. The boys face is unsure about the situation and really paying attention to these men that are not displaying a good example. Subban would go on to score the game winning goal in overtime, and a group of ignorant hockey fans tweeted how he was a monkey. This image displays the ignorance of people and the discrimination that still exists in sports.

This message these two men are trying to get across is too the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. Earlier in the NBA season Sterling told his girlfriend that he didn't want black people coming to his games. His girlfriend told people this remark that Sterling had made and it quickly blew up into a big problem. The most powerful part of this image is the signs, because it is a small but powerful protest towards Sterling. He has African American men in the coaching staff and on his team, though he still made this terrible remark. Many African Americans started tweeting about this thing Sterling had said with completed disappointment, as they thought racism has been gone throughout the NBA. The fact that there are still people like this and there is still a huge form of racism throughout the NBA which has many African American men throughout league. This is a display of discrimination and how racism still exists in sports today.

  1. Nice work Eric. I like your thesis and message. Knowing that these things happen in sports truly makes me disappointed as a sports fan. I like the images you picked, but the only advice I would give you is to go deeper into the textual elements of your photos that demonstrates your thesis. Overall a good read that made me aware of the issue, but just could have used a little more of an in depth description of the textual elements that demonstrate your theme.
